Arrange thorough examination by a competent person
Lifting equipment must be thoroughly examined by a competent person, who produces a written Schedule 1 report stating the examination date, the date the next is due, and any defects that are or could become dangerous. Serious defects must be reported immediately to the dutyholder and the enforcing authority.

Examinations are required before first use, after assembly at a new location, at regular in-service intervals, and following exceptional circumstances such as damage, long disuse, or significant repair.

Schedule 1 thorough examination report
The report must record the premises and equipment, safe working load, date of last examination, whether the equipment is safe to operate, any dangerous defects with remedial actions and timescales, the date the next examination is due, and the competent person's details.
Every 6 months (passenger lifts) or 12 months
Passenger-carrying lifts must be thoroughly examined every 6 months; other lifting equipment every 12 months. A competent person may instead draw up a written examination scheme. The report must state which interval category applies.
